DeAndre Hopkins is now a free agent as the Arizona Cardinals shockingly opted to release him last week.
The wide receiver had been the subject of trade rumors for months but seemed to indicate he wanted to stay in a video, while new Cards head coach Jonathan Gannon and GM Monti Ossenfort both implied that they expected him to be part of the roster at the start of next season.
Turns out that the player wasn’t even traded, he simply got cut and is now the biggest free agent on the market.
Hopkins has described the type of team he wants to be on next, also naming the top quarterbacks in the game today. While he didn’t suggest that the New York Jets could be a destination, nor did he name Aaron Rodgers, the new-look AFC side has been tipped as one of the teams possibly set to make a move for the star wideout.
NFL analyst Jason Fitzgerald has speculated over whether New York would be willing to offer Hopkins the same type of deal they were ready to hand Odell Beckham Jr. before he decided to join the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s definitely an enticing prospect, with Rodgers now the team’s offensive star. But they’ve also added multiple receiving talents this offseason, including Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Mecole Hardman. Garrett Wilson, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Corey Davis, and Denzel Mims are also still on the Jets’ roster.
Either way, Hopkins’ availability has added to all of the offseason drama we’ve already witnessed this year. Let’s just wait and see what happens.
