The New York Jets have made a surprising move this week as they’ve decided to cut a player to allow them to take Aaron Rodgers off the injured reserve and add him to the 53-man roster.
The team announced having released fullback Nick Bawden so they could activate Rodgers, though the quarterback isn’t expected to play this season.
Rodgers has admitted that he won’t risk coming back in 2023, plus there’s really no need to given that the Jets have been eliminated from playoff contention. But, according to head coach Robert Saleh, the decision will allow the veteran QB to continue practicing with the team as he undergoes rehabilitation. Leaving him on the injured reserve would have kept him away from team practice.
“We’re still going to keep him on the active,” Saleh said on Wednesday. “It’s all part of his rehab. Just having him on the field is a plus for everybody, for him and his teammates.”
That’s sad if we’re being honest. Cutting a guy for someone who has no chance of playing or even taking first-team reps in practice just doesn’t seem fair.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see who starts at quarterback in Week 16 as Rodgers is obviously not playing and Zach Wilson is in concussion protocol.
