Just one day after ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a bombshell of a report that All-Pro versatile offensive weapon Deebo Samuel “didn’t wish “to get a deal done” with the San Francisco 49ers this spring, Samuel told Jeff Darlington of ESPN he wants his employer to trade him.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added more details when he reported that Samuel, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, “is uncomfortable with how he was used in Kyle Shanahan’s offense in 2021” and has “become disinterested in engaging on long-term contract extension talks.”
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported Wednesday the San Francisco 49ers would want a “king’s ransom” to part with their disgruntled wide receiver.
The 49ers have given no indication they plan on trading Samuel, who is under contract through the 2022 season.
Things between the two could quickly turn ugly if the 49ers decided to hold onto Samuel in hopes that they could repair the relationship.
Samuel regularly lined up all over the field last season, recording 77 receptions for 1,405 yards along and racking up 59 carries for 365 yards. He also recorded 14 touchdowns, eight of which came on the ground.
