The New York Giants may reportedly target two big-named quarterbacks in the offseason, including a four-time Pro Bowler.
Daniel Jones was released late in the 2024 regular season, with veteran backup Drew Lock finishing the year as the Giants’ starting quarterback. With the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Giants are in a good spot to get one of the top quarterbacks prospects.
According to a report from ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders and New Orleans Saints signal-caller Derek Carr are a pair of options on the table for the New York Giants.
Raanan notes there’s “a belief” that the NFC East team was “high on” the 22-year-old Sanders:
“In the draft, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward are expected to be the top QB options. The Giants have done extensive work on both. There was a belief during the season that they were high on Sanders. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Texas’ Quinn Ewers and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart appear to be the next tier of quarterbacks in the draft.
The trade avenue could also be an option. The future of Derek Carr in New Orleans is one that could come into question. Nothing should be ruled out.”

The 33-year-old Derek Carr has two years remaining on the four-year, $150 million deal he signed with New Orleans in 2023. Like his nine-year run with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, Carr’s tenure in the Big Easy has been hampered by injuries and inconsistent play.

The New York Giants could target Carr has a bridge option, and he’d undoubtedly be an upgrade over Jones, Lock or Tommy DeVito. But if they have the opportunity to draft somebody like Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward with the No. 3 pick, GM Joe Schoen would be wise to select his new franchise quarterback there.
New York Giants Have Plenty Of Options To Consider
If the Giants want to sign or trade for a veteran QB, the potential options could include Kirk Cousins (Atlanta Falcons), Russell Wilson (a pending free agent), Geno Smith (Seattle Seahawks), Sam Darnold (free agent) or Justin Fields (free agent).
Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are likely fighting for their jobs this year, and the easiest way to buy themselves more time is to hit it right on their next quarterback.
