New York Giants owner John Mara has given a very compelling hint on what his team might do with their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft next month.
This year’s draft is loaded with promising quarterback prospects. With the No. 6 pick, many wonder if the New York Giants will draft a QB. and thus confirm their plans to eventually move on from Daniel Jones.
Speaking to reporters on Monday’s annual league meeting, Mara admitted that he endorses the idea of the team drafting a quarterback, per ESPN’s reporter Jordan Raanan:
“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that…
“I know they’re looking at the quarterbacks. You’ve seen that. They’ve gone to some of the pro day, we’ve had some of those guys in. I don’t think they’re even close to making a final determination yet as to which way we’re going to go on that. Those discussions will happen over the next few weeks.”
At this point, just about everybody expects the Chicago Bears to use the No. 1 pick on USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Washington Commanders (No. 2) and New England Patriots (No.3) will also presumably take a quarterback, with LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy headlining the best available quarterbacks after Williams.

The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers hold the No. 4 and No. 5 picks, respectively. They won’t be taking a quarterback with their respective picks, though both are strong candidates to trade their selections to a QB-needy team.
The New York Giants handed the aforementioned Jones a four-year contract extension worth $160 million last year. Jones endured another tough year before suffering a season-ending ACL tear against the Las Vegas Raiders, prompting many to call for the Giants to make a change at QB after five mostly disappointing years under “Danny Dimes.”
The New York Giants Need To Draft A Quarterback
The New York Giants don’t necessarily need to use their first-round pick on a quarterback, but it’s imperative that they use one 2024 selection on a signal-caller. There’s just no way they can expect to compete next season with Jones and Drew Lock as their quarterbacks.
Another option is for the New York Giants is to trade back into the later stages of round one and take a quarterback. Options there could include Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon’s Bo Nix.
