A new video of Kadarius Toney’s offside penalty in the Kansas City Chiefs-Buffalo Bills game has emerged, and it shows that the officials made the right call.
As well, it should stop Chiefs fans, players and coaches from complaining about the officiating.
Toney was called for offensive offside late in the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Bills. The offside nullified a go-ahead touchdown Toney recorded off a sweet lateral pass from superstar tight end Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs wound up turning the ball over on downs.
In some cases, a referee may warn an NFL player if he’s offside in order to prevent a flag on a game-changing play. Sometimes, a player can also seek an official’s input to see if they’re actually offside or not.
On X/Twitter, Chiefs fan Michael Howard shared a new video angle of Toney’s offside penalty. It shows that Toney never actually checked with officials to see if he was lined up onside, so it’s simply on him for being penalized:
Head official Carl Cheffers stated after the game that the crew will give “alignment advice” if a layer asks for it. Cheffers also correctly noted that a warning is NOT required, and that Toney’s offside penalty was “beyond a warning.”

Offside penalties are almost never called on the offense. Whether Chiefs fans like it or not, the officials made the correct call here. Toney could have checked with the referees…or simply lined up an extra yard backwards.
Or, the Chiefs could have still marched down the field for the game-winning touchdown instead of turning the ball over on downs. Ultimately, the loss falls on an offense that isn’t playing up to its usual standards this year.
