If you want to know how detrimental a loss can feel to a fan, just ask almost every woman in America who is in a relationship with a man who is a die-hard fan of his NFL team.
Fans of losing teams cope with misery in different ways. A loss on Sunday can put you in a terrible mood the next day at work as you might have co-workers who are going to rub it in even more. Others may avoid watching any sports shows to be reminded of the loss.
One study shows at least one thing losing fans all have in common: overeating. A report conducted by Bookies.com analyzed the calorie change in fans of losing teams from the U.S. average.
According to Business Insider, the average American consumes 3,600 calories a day. Over the course of a 16-game season that would come out to 57,600 calories.
The top of the list are fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars, whose fan base ate roughly 10% more calories the day after a loss during their 1-15 season. After them were the Jets fans at 8.13% and Falcons and Texans fans both at 6.25%. Those were the worst teams in the NFL in 2020.
On the other side, the 14-2 Kansas City Chiefs fan base consumed the fewest calories the day after a loss at -3.13% fewer than the national average. Following them were the Packers, Bills and Steelers.
When it comes to the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Bucs, their fan base only consumed 180 fewer post-game calories across the whole of the 2020-2021 season than the average U.S. adult.
