The Seattle Seahawks know all about bringing in players that have overcome adversity. The Seahawks’ newest running back may be the rookie who has overcome the most in his life.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks signed Florida International running back Anthony Jones as an undrafted free agent and he has quite the story of survival as he was shot in the head in 2018.
On a lighter note, he is also related to Vikings’ star running back Dalvin Cook.
“FIU RB Anthony Jones, who has recovered from being shot in the face last year and is a relative of Vikings’ RB Dalvin Cook, will be signing with the Seattle Seahawks, per source,” Schefter tweeted.
Jones was shot in a drive-by shooting just north of Miami on Sept. 6, 2018 and the bullet entered near Jones’ collarbone and exited below his left eye and above his left cheekbone.
Per a report from the Sun-Sentinel, Jones was required surgery due to the swelling that had developed around his neck and had to have his meals through a tube for the next two weeks.

“That first night, I asked God, ‘Why me?'” Jones told the The Associated Press. “I did. You know I did. I just wished I could rewind time, man. Why me? I don’t ever do anything to anybody. I’m a good dude. I respect everybody. I’m a respectful man. My momma raised me right. I’ve never done anything to anybody. I just want to play football, graduate, get my degree and help my family.
“I have that chance now. A second chance.”
Jones actually returned to the football field in 2018, finishing the year with 338 rushing yards and six touchdowns in his six games played.
During the 2019 season, Jones rushed for 867 yards and nine touchdowns and added 10 receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns at FIU.
