The Kansas City Chiefs were not at all satisfied with the referees’ decision to penalize them for being offside ahead of their most important play during Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Chiefs have fallen to 8-5 on the back of the 20-17 defeat and are seething over it, with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes sparing no punches in their criticism of the officiating after the game.
Mahomes had completed a pass to Travis Kelce, who threw the ball back to Kadarius Toney right before meeting members of the Bills’ secondary. The wide receiver ran it in for a touchdown in one of the most beautiful sequences from Week 14. It would not count, however.
The refs flagged the play, penalizing Toney for lining up offside and wiping out the TD that would have put the Chiefs ahead and won them the game.
Reid felt Kansas City should have been warned, branding the officiating “embarrassing.” But a pre-snap photo showing how badly Toney had lined up suggests it was blatant enough for everyone to have noticed.
Yup, that’s pretty bad.
