The Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins played in one of the coldest games in NFL history on Saturday night. The temperature at kickoff was a blistering -4 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the fourth-coldest game in the history of the league.
In the third quarter, with the Chiefs driving and looking to punch it into the end zone, quarterback Patrick Mahomes took off and was headed for a touchdown when he was viciously hit by Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott with a helmet-to-helmet hit. The forceful blow resulted in Mahomes’ helmet basically exploding with a huge crack and pieces flying everywhere.
There is no doubt that the extreme cold temperatures contributed to Mahomes’ helmet shattering as hits like that happen dozens of times in a typical NFL game and they rarely result in a helmet cracking like that.
If the Buffalo Bills beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, then Mahomes and the Chiefs will travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills, which would be the very first road playoff game of Mahomes’ career. If the Steelers were to pull off an upset of the Bills, then the Chiefs will remain at home to take on C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans.
So it is looking like whatever the result of the Steelers and Bills game, the Chiefs will be playing a second straight game in less than ideal, freezing temperatures.
