The New Orleans Saints are adding a former Pro Bowl linebacker to their star-studded defense.
Per a report from Jordan Schultz of theScore, the Saints are signing former Dallas Cowboys’ star Jaylon Smith following a workout with the club.
Smith split the 2021 season with the Cowboys and two of their main rivals, the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants. He spent the entire 2022 campaign with the Giants, appearing in 13 games (11 starts) while compiling one sack and 88 combined tackles.
Dallas drafted Smith in the second round (34th overall) back in 2016. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Smith had his best season for the Cowboys in 2019, earning his lone career Pro Bowl nod after tallying nine pass defenses, two forced fumbles, 2.5 sacks and 142 combined tackles. A year earlier, Smith recorded a career-high four sacks.
For his career, Smith has 21 pass defenses, six forced fumbles, two interceptions, 11 sacks and 624 combined tackles.
Smith will join a New Orleans defense that has finished ninth or better in scoring over each of the last three years. The Saints defense is led by star cornerback Marshon Lattimore, ageless defensive end Cameron Jordan, do-it-all linebacker Demario Davis and the safety duo of Tyrann Mathieu and Marcus Maye.
