There’s reportedly a new favorite to succeed Bill Belichick as the head coach of the New England Patriots.
On Thursday, Belichick and Robert Kraft held a press conference to inform everyone that the legendary head coach is leaving the organization after a glorious 24-year run. Belichick emphasized that he and Kraft agreed to part ways, making the former a free agent for the first time in a quarter-century.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo “is a strong candidate to” take over as New England’s head coach. Mayo spent his entire playing career with the Pats (2008 to 2015) before joining their coaching staff in 2019.
There is also speculation that the Patriots will target former fan favorite and three-time Super Bowl champion Mike Vrabel, who was unexpectedly fired by the Tennessee Titans earlier this week.
Mayo has long been mentioned as a candidate to succeed Belichick, given his renowned ability to communicate with the players. As for Belichick, he shouldn’t be on the free agent market for long, with seven other teams now in need of a new head coach.
