Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are widely expected to part ways after this season, as another miserable year in Foxborough inching closer to it conclusion.
If Belichick and the Patriots divorce, there certainly won’t be a shortage of teams interested in the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach. Belichick, widely viewed as the greatest coach in NFL history, would immediately emerge as the No. 1 free agent on the 2024 market.
According to the latest betting odds, the Washington Commanders are the new favorites to land Belichick at 3/1. The Los Angeles Chargers have the second-best odds at 4/1, followed by the Carolina Panthers at 5/1.
The Commanders are also expected to make a coaching change at some point between now and the end of the regular season. Ron Rivera has gone 26-33-1 as Washington’s head coach, failing to lead them to a single winning season up to this point.
The new Josh Harris-led ownership group wasn’t here, of course, when Rivera was hired as Washington’s head coach. So there’s good reason to believe that Harris and company will want to choose a coach that they’re confident in, and they wouldn’t do any better than Belichick himself.
Interestingly, veteran NFL journalist and author Gary Myers heard from a source that the Chargers are the favorites for Belichick.
