Earlier this week, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis fired head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler following a frustrating 26-14 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday night.
McDaniels became the first NFL coach to get fired here in the 2023 season. He finished with a disappointing 9-16 record over his one and a half seasons in Sin City, a giant letdown considering that McDaniels inherited a 2021 playoff team that won 10 games.
The BetOnline sportsbook has updated its betting odds on which head coach will be fired next. Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders is the heavy odds-on favorite at +150, followed by Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears at +300.
Brandon Staley (Los Angeles Chargers), Matt LaFleur (Green Bay Packers) and Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) round out the top five.
In his first year with the Commanders, Rivera went 7-9 and helped the team to a surprise NFC East division crown. But the franchise hasn’t been able to repeat that magic, going 7-10 and 8-8-1 in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The Commanders’ Week 8 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles dropped them to 3-5 on the season and further out of playoff contention. If Washington loses to a lowly New England Patriots team on Sunday in Foxborough, it just might prompt the Josh Harris-led ownership group to make a change at head coach.
