The New England Patriots have released a former college standout and rookie wide receiver, two months after adding him to their roster.
The AFC East club announced that they have released 24-year-old wideout Ed Lee, a former standout for the Rhode Island Rams. Lee was coming off a breakout year in which he recorded 56 receptions for 908 yards and five touchdowns.
This is the second notable transaction involving a former Patriots’ wide receiver. Earlier this week, Jalen Hurd (a former third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers) decided to retire. The Patriots had just added Hurd to their roster on July 25.
This offseason, Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick prioritized the receiving corps’. He signed ex-Pittsburgh Steelers’ and Kansas City Chiefs’ standout JuJu Smith-Schuster and former Miami Dolphins’ tight end Mike Gesicki. As well, Belichick used a sixth-round draft pick (187th overall) on LSU Tigers’ star wideout Kayshon Boutte.
New England will open their 2023 season with a Week 1 home contest against the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 10. Seven days after that, they’ll welcome the AFC East rival Dolphins on NBC “Sunday Night Football.”
