The New England Patriots have finalized their 53 man roster for the season, and it looks like Quarterback Mac Jones is literally the last man standing.
In a surprising move, the Patriots have waived Brian Zappe and Malik Cunningham today, which leaves incumbent starter Jones as the only Quarterback on the roster. There is no backup Quarterback or third-stringer. Just Jones.
This is a surprising move as injuries are ubiquitous in the NFL, plus the front office and coaching staff isn’t sold on Jones as their long term-guy. There’s no word on if the Patriots are pursuing another Quarterback through trade of free agency.
Quarterback has been a rough position for the Patriots since they lost their long term starter Tom Brady in 2020. Mac Jones was drafted in 2021 and had an above average rookie season before falling off in 2022. After an injury, Brian Zappe stepped in as the starter, which makes his release more perplexing.
New England didn’t help Jones in 2022 as they infamously signed defensive coach Matt Patricia as their offensive coordinator. Though Patricia is gone from the organization, the team isn’t sold on Jones, who wants a Quarterback who can keep their incredible defense fresh during the game.
