That didn’t take long…
About 24 hours after it was announced that the New England Patriots were parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick, they have already announced his successor.
No interviews were needed. No other coaches were brought in to shoot their shot at Robert Kraft and company. Nothing of that sort. Instead, the Pats stuck to their original game plan by keeping things in-house and hiring the man who they had planned to take over for Belichick all along.
And this morning, they made it official by announcing Jerod Mayo as their new head coach.
Mayo has spent many years as a part of the Patriots organization. He was taken by the team with the 10th overall pick in the 2008 draft, and played in New England until his retirement after the 2015 season. Then, in 2019, he rejoined the franchise as their inside linebackers coach — a position he’s help for the past five seasons while being groomed to replace Belichick as the team’s head coach.
It had previously been reported by Ian Rapoport that the Patriots had a contractual agreement in place for Mayo to take over the head coaching position once Belichick was gone, and it appears as though that agreement has now come into play.
