Fans believe the Denver Broncos got finessed by the New Orleans Saints in their pursuit of Sean Payton. But according to a certain report, it could have been a lot worse as the saints wanted more than what they ended up getting for the Super Bowl winner.
The Broncos have appointed Payton as their third head coach in the last three years on the back of a lengthy negotiating period, with the announcement dropping this Tuesday.
Denver will hope Payton turns out to be the man to lead them back to the Super Bowl, given that they’ve rid themselves of a first-round pick for this year, plus a third-round pick for next year. The Broncos got a third-round pick from the Saints for 2024 in the deal.
What The Saints Really Wanted For Sean Payton
According to Mike Klis of 9News, who cites a source, the Saints initially asked for two first-round picks and a second-round pick, which is what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave up for John Gruden in 2002. The Broncos declined as they’d already relinquished two first-rounders and two second-rounders for Russell Wilson last year.
The Saints then asked for a first, second, third, and fourth-round pick over the span of two years, similar to the Bill Parcells deal in 1997. But Denver refused that as well.
Eventually, they settled on a first-round pick for 2023 and a second-round pick for 2024 in exchange for Payton and a 2024 third-round pick.
