Dallas Cowboys star running back Tony Pollard is reportedly willing to take a discount if it means staying with the only NFL team he’s ever played for.
After playing out the 2023 season on the franchise tag, Pollard is eligible to enter free agency for the first time in his career. The 2024 NFL free agency period officially opens next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. EST.
According to a report from Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, Pollard is “open to” taking a hometown discount to remain with America’s Team.

Pollard took over as the Cowboys’ top running back in 2022 as Ezekiel Elliott continued to decline in production. Pollard has surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark in each of the last two seasons, including a career-best 1,007 yards in 2022.
Pollard is just one of several big-named RBs likely to hit the market next week. Two-time rushing champion Derrick Henry, 2022 rushing champion Josh Jacobs and do-it-all star New York Giants star Saquon Barkley are also slated to hit the market.

Unfortunately for running backs, teams aren’t willing to pay them top dollar anymore. Even if Pollard is willing to take a discount, Dallas may still feel inclined to find a younger and cheaper option.
At any rate, the Cowboys and Pollard have seven days to potentially work out a deal before free agency opens next week. Otherwise, there should be plenty of interest in the two-time 1,000-yard rusher on the open market.
