Earlier this week, the NFC-leading Philadelphia Eagles signed veteran free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in an effort to improve their run defense.
The signing of Suh came just days after the Eagles dropped their first game of the 2022 season to the Washington Commanders. Led by Brian Robinson Jr.’s 86 yards, the Commanders racked up 152 rushing yards on 49 carries in the 32-21 victory.
When speaking to reporters, the 35-year-old was asked why he chose the Eagles. Per John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Suh cited “championships”, and his belief that he can help the team complete that quest.
Suh spent the previous three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl 55 ring with them in the 2020 season. The Bucs decided not to re-sign Suh nor Jason Pierre-Paul after the 2021 season, two veteran mainstays on the championship team.
Earlier this month, the Eagles put run-stopping sensation and rookie Jordan Davis on the injured reserve with an ankle injury. The run defense has been vulnerable without Davis, and Suh can only help a unit that was greatly exposed by the Commanders on Monday.
Suh won 2010 Defensive Rookie of the Year honors with the Detroit Lions. He’s a five-time Pro Bowler with three First-team All-Pro and two Second-team All-Pro nods on his résumé. Suh was also named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.

For his career, the soon-to-be 36-year-old has 70.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries. Suh posted six sacks for the Buccaneers in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The Eagles simply have nothing to lose with the signing of Suh. He’s a rotational player at this phase of his career, but his experience and championship pedigree make Suh the ideal fit for the NFL’s top team.
Philadelphia returns to action tomorrow afternoon, where they visit the Indianapolis Colts.
