NBC reportedly spent a whopping amount to get an exclusive deal that will have them stream an NFL postseason game from their Peacock platform.
According to Sports Business Journal, the network was relieved of $110 million in exchange for a playoff game set to be played on January 13. It is a huge gamble for the company, but it is hoping to increase subscriptions to Peacock.
The least-watched playoff game in the 2022 season drew 21.8 million. So it would mark a huge win for NBC if they can draw anything close to that.
Of course, there’ll be no telling how good or bad of an investment they’ve made just yet. But the NFL is usually worth gambling on – unless you’re a player, because then they suspend you…
“Ultimately, I think where we’ll decide whether this was a good investment or not is long down the road,” NBC Sports president Rick Cordella said on the deal.
The company’s secondary broadcast team surprisingly won’t have Al Michaels for the playoffs. NBC has decided to leave him off postseason coverage, and it’s believed that it’s because of something he said about Taylor Swift.
