The Chicago Bears have released a veteran quarterback ahead of Thursday night’s contest against the Washington Commanders.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bears have released quarterback Nathan Peterman. This leaves them with third-year starter Justin Fields and undrafted rookie out of Shepherd, Tyson Bagent.
It’s been an on-again, off-again working relationship for Peterman and the Bears. Chicago re-signed the 29-year-old in March, only to release him ahead of Week 1. Peterman was brought back two days later and remained on the roster through the first four games before getting released.
Peterman memorably had a disastrous first career start for the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Chargers back in 2017. Peterman, starting in place of a struggling Tyrod Taylor, threw five interceptions and was shown the bench.
Peterman joined the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018 and stayed there until 2021 before joining the Bears last year. In 13 career games, he holds a 1-4-0 record with a 53.1 completion percentage for 712 yards and four touchdowns against a whopping 13 interceptions.
The Bears enter Week 5 as one of football’s last remaining winless teams (0-4), along with the Carolina Panthers. There is growing speculation that head coach Matt Eberflus will be fired if the Bears drop to 0-5 on the year.
