The Minnesota Vikings’ backfield will look noticeably different in 2023.
For starters, the team released former franchise star Dalvin Cook during the offseason, paving the way for backup Alexander Mattison to emerge as their new starter. And behind him they’ve just added another significant piece to their offense.
According to reports, the Vikings have signed former Miami Dolphins starting running back Myles Gaskin.
Gaskin was released on Tuesday by the Dolphins in a surprise roster cutdown move:
The Vikings have been looking for some depth behind Mattison and it appears as though they’ve found some. Gaskin is expected to compete for the backup role with sophomore Ty Chandler. And his effectiveness in the passing game could give him the inside edge for a third-down role.

Gaskin spent his first four seasons in the league with the Miami Dolphins, after being selected by the team in the seventh-round of the 2019 draft. In 2020, he started seven games for the team, racking up 584 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards, and five total touchdowns. In 2021, he got another 10 starts while appearing in all 17 games. And he put up career highs in rushing yards (612) and total touchdowns (seven).
Last season he struggled, however, playing in just four games while totaling 26 rushing yards and 28 receiving yards. At just 26-years-old, he’ll have the opportunity to bounce back with a strong Vikings offense in 2023.
