Last week, Mayfield released commemorative t-shirts for his Week 1 matchup with his former team. The tagline was simple, Mayfield was “Off the Leash” with his new team.
His former team remembered that phrase after the game on Sunday.
Mayfield almost got his revenge with a few blown coverages by the Browns defense leading to big plays and a lead late in the fourth quarter. The Cleveland Browns barely pulled off the victory, but a win is a win.
After the Browns defeated the Panthers 26-24 on Sunday, Garrett said the T-shirts motivated his team to be “a bit off the leash” in the game, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
“It had us a bit off the leash … I mean, the tone was set with the attitude of some of the guys on the other side. We were just ready to go out there and finally put things to bed.”
Following the game, Browns executive J.W. Johnson trolled Mayfield’s tagline with a tweet:

With Week 1 out of the way, Johnson and the Browns get the last laugh against Mayfield.
The quarterback finished the day with 235 yards and one touchdown against one interception on 16-for-27 passing. He also added a score on the ground.
Garrett racked up two sacks and three tackles for loss.
