For Thursday night flexing to get approved, 24 of the NFL’s 32 owners have to vote for it. A vote was not taken last week, but it appears there was an unofficial tally taken and based on that tally, the flexing proposal came two votes shy of being approved.
According to NBC Sports, there were 22 teams that voted for Thursday flexing, eight teams that voted against it and two teams decided not to vote at all. The two teams that decided not to vote were the Broncos and Panthers, which means they now likely hold the key to whether there will be Thursday flexing in 2023.
According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, teams like the Bears, Giants, Jets, Saints and Packers voted against flex-scheduling for Thursday Night Football.
Thursday Night Football flex scheduling is something that’s been a hot topic of conversation, and if approved, Amazon would be able to flex a Sunday afternoon game into the Thursday night slot during Weeks 14-17.
Now, the league will revisit the topic during their next meeting in May.
It’s easy to see why NFL owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell would love this, as it ensures a better matchup in prime time. Fans have been complaining about the lack of competitive games on Thursday for years now. This being approved could change that drastically.
