More details have emerged on Dak Prescott’s hand surgery.
The Dallas Cowboys lost their start quarterback to a hand injury during Sunday’s Week 1 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was subsequently announced that Prescott would have to undergo hand surgery and miss multiple weeks.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Ed Werder provided specific details on Prescott’s hand surgery, reporting that the 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year “required a plate and screws to repair and stabilize fracture near right thumb.”
Werder added that Prescott wasn’t placed on the injured reserve as a way “to allow the flexibility to have him to eventually take practice reps as he gets closer to a potential return to play.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed hope that Prescott will make a quick return, hence why he wasn’t put on IR. If a player is placed on the injured reserve, he has to sit out a minimum of four games.
Sunday was a tough night for the Cowboys all-around. They had few answers for Tampa Bay’s offense and got little going offensively. Aside from Prescott, Dallas lost two other key starters in guard Connor McGovern and safety Jayron Kearse, who will both miss several weeks of action as well.

Now, the defending NFC East champions have to find a way to get by without the franchise star for multiple games. The Cowboys were the only team in their division to lose in Week 1, and things don’t get any easier with Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals coming to town.
After hosting the Bengals, the Cowboys will visit the NFC East rival New York Giants in Week 3 on Monday Night Football. Dallas will then return home for a Week 4 tilt against another division foe in the Washington Commanders.
If the 29-year-old ends up being ready to return to the field before the four-week timeline, the Cowboys might get him back for their Week 5 road tilt against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
