Week 14 was the third and final MNF doubleheader of the 2023 season. In the past, MNF doubleheaders were reserved for Week 1 but that all changed last year when ESPN moved the doubleheader to Week 2.
This year, the schedule was expanded to three separate nights — Weeks 2, 3 and 14.
It appears we will have more next season.
Per Brian Rolapp, who is the NFL’s chief media and business officer, the league is planning to do more of those double headers.
“I’m not sure we’ve drawn any broad conclusions yet, but we do like the model where it’s ultimately more football for fans,” Rolapp said, (first transcribed by Awful Announcing).
“Last Monday was a perfect example — both those games were fantastic, and everyone got to see it, go back and forth, which they’re doing on Sundays anyway in a lot of ways.”
ESPN said this year for having two games was an opportunity to “transform a Sunday afternoon environment into a primetime window.”
“Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli,” which features analysis and discussion between the Manning brothers and special guests, will likely be altered for the doubleheaders yet again.
