Mitchell Trubisky was supposed to be the next big thing at QB for the Chicago Bears. His Pro Bowl year in 2018 saw him lead the Bears to an 11-3 record behind 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Aside from that spectacular season, Trubisky struggled to reach his potential in Chicago. After splitting starting reps with Nick Foles in 2020, the Bears completely moved on from their former first-round hope — selecting Ohio State standout Justin Fields in the 2021 draft.
The current backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills left Chicago after the team chose not to re-sign him — but he doesn’t seem to know or fully understand that.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently spent two days visiting the Bills’ training camp, and shared a hilarious moment courtesy of Trubisky not knowing that he was not cut by the Bears.
“(Bills) Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, in a meeting early in camp, asked every offensive player and coach to stand up. ‘If you’re a coach and you’ve ever been fired, sit down,’ Daboll said, and every coach in the room sat down. ‘OK,’ Daboll continued. ‘If you’re a player and you’ve ever been cut or traded, sit down.’ A large group of players sat down. ‘If you weren’t picked in the first round, sit down,’ Daboll said, and suddenly the only person in the room still standing was Allen. (The only other first-rounder on Buffalo’s offense is backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who sat down with the cut-or-traded group, even though he technically wasn’t cut nor traded by the Bears, just not re-signed.)”
The one-year, $2.5 million deal Trubisky signed gives Buffalo a solid backup option.
Overall, Trubisky appeared in ten games in the 2020 season. He finished with 2,055 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
During the Wild Card Round of the 2020–21 NFL playoffs, Trubisky completed 19 of 29 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Bears 21–9.
