NFL fans weren’t happy with a comment from NBC play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico following the Detroit Lions’ upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.
Thanks to a prolific ground game that picked up 118 yards and a stingy defense that held reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes to 226 yards passing, the Lions came into Arrowhead Stadium and stunned the defending champions 21-20.
After the game, Tirico stated that Detroit’s win carried “an asterisk” since the Chiefs were missing All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce (dealing with a bone bruise and hyper-extended knee) and superstar defensive tackle Chris Jones (absent because of a holdout):
Fans were angry and surprised over the questionable “asterisk” comment. Here’s how some of them reacted to Tirico’s claim:

Lions fans of course have every good reason to be excited about this win. The Chiefs may have been without two of their top three players, but beating Mahomes is always going to be a special victory, regardless of who does it.
If the Chiefs were without Mahomes, then maybe the Lions wouldn’t have felt as good about the win. But defeating the reigning MVP on his own field, in front of a raucous crowd at Arrowhead, is no joke.
The Lions handed the Chiefs their first Week 1 loss since the 2014 season. Detroit will try to improve to 2-0 on the young season when they welcome the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field on Sept. 11.
