NBC’s Mike Tirico responded to the immense criticism he has received over the last 48 hours regarding a comment he made after the Detroit Lions’ season opening win against the Kansas City Chiefs.
After the Lions upset the defending Super Bowl champions at Arrowhead Stadium, Tirico stated that their win carried “an asterisk” since the Chiefs were without Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce (injured) and superstar defensive tackle Chris Jones (absent due to a contract holdout).
Tirico responded to the public backlash over his “asterisk” comment while speaking to Tony Paul of The Detroit News (h/t Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post)”
“If you have a problem with the word ‘asterisk,’ that’s a very legitimate complaint,” Tirico said. “However, it should be in context. If you want to take out the middle of the comment and make it the whole comment, then you don’t understand properly how to attribute things.”
Thursday marked just the eighth regular season loss for Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium (the 10th if you include the postseason). Regardless of who the Chiefs were missing, simply beating the defending champions with the game’s best quarterback will always be a remarkable achievement.
