It’s tough to win in the NFL when you have the officials making these sorts of calls against your team.
It is certainly not the only reason why the Miami Dolphins are losing the the Chargers on Sunday Night Football, but it doesn’t help having to withstand terrible roughing the passer calls which keep the opposing team’s drives alive.
Facing a third down, the Miami defense thought they had a stop when Jaelan Phillips got to quarterback Justin Herbert and took him down for the sack. It seemed like just your average sack, but the refs didn’t see it that way.
They flagged Phillips for roughing the passer in what has to be one of the worst calls we’ve seen all season.
It was so bad that even Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel couldn’t help but laugh hysterically at what he was seeing.

The good news for the Dolphins is that the terrible call from the officials didn’t prove costly, as Miami forced a punt just a few plays later. And they would go on to score their second touchdown of the evening on the ensuing drive, bringing them to within a score of the Chargers.
As for the penalty, it was clearly a legal tackle. There’s absolutely nothing that Phillips could have done there to avoid getting flagged. Even former NFL referee and current Sunday Night Football rules analyst Terry McAulay acknowledge that it was a bad call by the officials.
It’s just the latest example of why the NFL needs to institute instant replay on all significant calls like this one.
