Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has confirmed that Johnny Manziel didn’t watch any film while he was with the Cleveland Browns.
Manziel, the subject of the Netflix documentary ‘Untold: Johnny Football’, admitted to staying away from the film room after getting drafted out of Texas A&M in 2014. But, given that it came from Johnny, folks weren’t so quick to believe.
McDaniel, who spent a season with the Browns and was part of Kyle Shanahan’s staff that resigned after a season, was a guest on ‘The Pivot’ recently. He would confirm Manziel’s admission.
The Dolphins HC’s Cleveland stint was highlighted by a trick play in which he and Shanahan pretended to shout at Manziel to distract the defense. The play worked, though the Browns gained nothing from it as they were hit with a penalty.
McDaniel would also note that there was discord between the coaching staff and front office over Manziel’s selection, who showed little respect or willingness to participate in any form of preparation. It’s no wonder his time with the Browns ended prematurely and he’s never played in the NFL again.
The Browns ignored advice from several sources, including consultants they hired to assess the 2014 QB class before drafting Manziel. The ramifications are being felt to this day.
