Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy understands that the fan base is upset for several reasons.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement Wednesday saying McCarthy would return as head coach for the 2024 season.
On Thursday, the Cowboys head said that fans should be frustrated but that he has “total confidence” in the team’s ability to win a Super Bowl.
McCarthy stood before the media on Thursday morning at his end-of-season press conference at the team’s headquarters at The Star in Frisco and stated his confidence in the direction of the team and where he stands with it.
“I am confident in the direction and I like where we are moving forward,” McCarthy said.
Jones said in a statement Wednesday: “I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach. There is a great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach. Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively.”

McCarthy has led the Cowboys to three straight 12-5 seasons and two NFC East titles but that is where the good times end.
The Cowboys were humbled at home, 48-32, against a young and inexperienced Green Bay Packers squad.
McCarthy has a career playoff record of 11-11.
He went 10-8 in the playoffs with the Packers and now is 1-3 in the playoffs with Dallas. McCarthy has won multiple playoff games in one season only once since the championship run, doing so in 2016.
A Super Bowl win buys any coach some time, and regular season success also kept McCarthy off the hot seat for a number of years. It has saved him once again.
