Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will undergo surgery after experiencing abdominal pain Wednesday morning, the team announced.
He will undergo an appendectomy and is expected to be released from the hospital later as the team says they anticipate him being available to coach Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The team’s coordinators Dan Quinn (defense), Brian Schottenheimer (offense), and John Fassel (special teams) will handle practices with McCarthy out.
The 9-3 Dallas Cowboys are set to battle the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East on Sunday.
If for some reason McCarthy is not able to coach Sunday night, Quinn could be an option to lead the Cowboys in their big NFC East matchup. Under McCarthy’s guidance, the Cowboys have been among the NFL’s best teams this season, posting a 9-3 record.
