Mike McCarthy’s time with the Dallas Cowboys is all but over. We are simply waiting for the news to come down.
The Dallas Cowboys spent parts of the 2023 season looking like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but as soon as they stepped on the field against the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, Dallas looked more like a team that was just happy to be included in the playoff conversation.
Dallas did enough to secure the NFC’s No. 2 seed. That appeared to be huge, as the Cowboys last lost at home in Week 1 of the 2022 season. Green Bay jumped out to a 27-0 lead and never looked back as the game was not as close as the 48-32 final score might indicate.
After the disappointing game, head coach Mike McCarthy avoided directly answering a question about his job security.
“I think the biggest thing is, you know, we’re disappointed,” McCarthy said. “I got a whole team in the locker room that’s hurting. I haven’t thought past the outcome of this game.”
He has one year remaining on his contract but it is unlikely that he will return next year.
“I don’t think anybody saw this coming,” McCarthy said. “You got to give Green Bay credit. They came in here hot. And this, you just saw on film over the past month. You know, they executed, and we didn’t. So, we didn’t get it done in any of the phases. We’re hurting, we’re disappointed, every man.”

The Cowboys have three consecutive 12-win seasons and playoff trips in four years under McCarthy but a terrible playoff record. Dallas is looking at 29 years since the franchise’s last trip to the NFC championship game. It was the 1995 season, when the Cowboys won their fifth Super Bowl title.
The team had a chance to host a divisional game after a wild-card victory for the first time since that 1995 season after finishing the regular season with a 16-game home winning streak.
Now they are headed into the offseason.
