An NFL writer has listed an intriguing AFC club as a potential landing spot for Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star wide receiver Mike Evans.
The 30-year-old Evans is entering the final year of his contract. Evans’ agent, Deryk Gilmore, has given the Bucs a deadline of next Saturday to sign him to an extension. Otherwise, the future Hall of Famer will play out 2023 on an expiring contract.
With Tom Brady long gone, many expect the Bucs to be one of football’s worst teams in 2023. If they’re out of the playoff race leading up to the trade deadline, the Bucs would be wise to deal the franchise star rather than lose him for nothing in 2024 free agency:
Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports looked at five potential landing spots for the Super Bowl 55 champion. One of the club’s on that list? The New England Patriots:
“Another layup given Bill Belichick’s history of adding proven veterans to the Patriots’ roster. It doesn’t hurt that Evans is the prototypical Belichick player: hard working, consistent, productive, team-oriented and a former Super Bowl champion to boot. Evans would be a welcomed addition to a good but not great New England receiving corps”
A proven and established star wideout has been lacking in New England for a while. Julian Edelman is the last Patriot to have hit 1,000 receiving yards in a season, and that was back in 2019.

Trading for a TD machine and consistent 1,000-yard wideout like Evans would certainly help the Patriots close the gap with other AFC heavyweights. But of course, they won’t be the only ones interested in Evans if he ends up hitting the trade block.
