If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are out of contention leading up to this year’s NFL trade deadline, it’s fair to assume that they’ll trade star wideout Mike Evans.
The 30-year-old Evans is in the final year of his contract, and the two sides were unable to agree on an extension heading into this season. Tampa enters Week 4 with a 2-1 record and in a three-way tie with the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons for first in the NFC South.
But if the Bucs ultimately decide to shop Evans, there will be plenty of teams interested in the perennial 1,000-yard wideout. Could we see a surprise NFC team make the move for the Super Bowl 55 champion?
Matthew Schmidt of NFL Analysis Network proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Tampa trading Evans to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2024 first-round pick and a future fourth-rounder:
“Washington already has Terry McLaurin in its receiving corps, but if it could put Evans alongside of him, the Commanders would suddenly have one of the better one-two punches in football.
Washington could offer the Bucs a 2024 first-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder, providing the Buccaneers with some great draft capital to help facilitate a rebuild. Meanwhile, the Commanders would land one of the NFL’s best and most consistent receivers.”
If Washington were to pay a first-rounder for Evans, they’d most certainly want him to agree to an extension right away. Paying that much for a rental in his 30s would be a giant risk, to say the very least.

But adding Evans to an offense led by Terry McLaurin,, Jahan Dotson and Brian Robinson Jr. would certainly make this unit even more dangerous, and it would go a long way in boosting the Commanders’ chances of reaching the postseason.
Of course, Washington will only make sense as a landing spot for Evans if they sustain this hot start and remain in playoff contention leading up to the deadline.
