Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick will still be headed to the 2020 Pro Bowl in Orlando as one of four Legends captains, and that is despite the overwhelming number of people who have demanded for the league to remove him.
Shortly after the information got out that Vick was going to be honored, a petition popped up on Change.org and it has garnered over 550,000 signatures.
“To honor a man who had zero regard for animals is unacceptable,” the Change.org petition states.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the controversy during a news conference on Wednesday.
“Over the last, what is it, nine years or so, we have supported Michael in his, what I think his recognition of the mistake he made,” Goodell said. “He’s paid a heavy price for that. He’s been accountable for it. He’s worked aggressively with the Humane Society and other institutions to deal with animal rights and to make sure people don’t make the same mistake he made, and I admire that.”
It was way back in 2007 when Vick would serve 18 months of a 23-month sentence in federal prison after he was found guilty of running a “cruel and inhumane” dogfighting ring operation called “Bad Newz Kennels.”
Upon his release, he would get a second chance in the NFL and he has been protested every step of the way when his name is connected to anything.
