In 2019 while catching passes from future hall-of-famer Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas set the NFL single season record with 149 receptions, a record he still holds to this day. In the three seasons since, the often injured Thomas has appeared in only 10 games catching a total of 56 passes.
Thomas appears on track to start the upcoming season fully healthy and was recently quoted saying that he believes himself and fellow Saints receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are poised to become the next “big three” in sports.
New Orleans signed quarterback Derek Carr to a four-year, $150 million contract this off season as they are trying to find some stability at the position ever since Brees retired following the 2020 season. Even with the upgrade at quarterback, it is hard to envision a scenario where Thomas, Olave and Shaheed dominate the league.
Olave and Shaheed are both entering just their second year in the league and although they both had productive rookie seasons, it usually takes years of chemistry and reps with your quarterback to reach true elite status.
Kudos to Thomas for having the self confidence in himself and the belief in his teammates to make such a comment, however, there were quite a few football fans on social media that did not see it the same way Thomas does. Here are a few of their reactions to his statement:
