NFL teams looking to bolster their rosters for a Super Bowl push now have just a few days left, with the Oct. 31 trade deadline quickly approaching.
As usual, the teams in contention will be looking to buy, whereas the bottom feeders will be selling off notable players for draft picks and other assets. However, there are also some teams who may not decide on their trade deadline plan of action until after Week 8.
Two such teams? The 2-4 Los Angeles Chargers and 3-4 New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees’ two former teams entered 2023 with playoff aspirations, but neither club has come close to meeting their expectations.
The Chargers have a winnable home game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday night, while the Saints will visit the pesky Indianapolis Colts. If the Chargers and Saints win and lose, respectively, could the two teams become trade partners?
With top wideout Mike Williams out for the season and rookie Quentin Johnston struggling, Los Angeles desperately needs another receiver to help Keenan Allen. Enter 2019 Offensive Player of the Year Michael Thomas.
The 30-year-old has managed to stay healthy for the first time in four years. So far, he has 34 catches for 371 yards and a touchdown. And that’s with a frustrating and inconsistent Derek Carr as his quarterback.

If the Saints end up selling, the Chargers should call GM Mickey Loomis and offer a 2024 fourth-round pick for Thomas. This is a fair trade for an ageing and injury-prone wideout that might not fit into New Orleans’ long-term plans, and any additional draft capital will help the Saints in their long overdue rebuild.
The big-bodied Thomas would form a dangerous duo with Keenan Allen, giving Justin Herbert that much needed No. 2 receiver that just might help Los Angeles climb back into the AFC playoff race.
