An NFL writer proposed the idea of the Dallas Cowboys trading one of the key members of their offense ahead of the 2023 season.
Earlier this offseason, Jerry Jones made a big-time splash by landing Houston Texans’ wideout Brandin Cooks, giving Dak Prescott and company a much-needed WR2 option behind superstar CeeDee Lamb.
With Cooks now in Dallas, veteran wideout Michael Gallup could be expendable. The 27-year-old hasn’t come close to matching his career year from 2019, when he tallied 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.
Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder recently looked at one player that each NFL club should trade before the month ends. For Dallas, Holder suggested that the Cowboys trade Gallup:
“The 27-year-old has battled injuries and posted back-to-back seasons with career lows in receiving yards with 445 in 2021 and 424 in 2022.
The Dallas Cowboys had to bring in some reinforcements and that’s why they traded for Brandin Cooks during the offseason. That alone puts Gallup’s future with the team in doubt, and Patrik Walker of the team’s website noted that second-year wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has been emerging during training camp.
Since Dallas now has two other options to serve as a second or third target behind CeeDee Lamb, Gallup is even more expendable.”
In the 2022 offseason, Dallas curiously released Pro Bowler Amari Cooper but handed the less-productive Gallup a five-year extension worth $57.5 million. Gallup appeared in 14 games last season but only averaged 30.3 yards per contest.

Cooks is a consistent 1,000-yard wideout who should fit in nicely with Prescott and Lamb. Throw in workhorse running back Tony Pollard (he’s coming off a career year), and Gallup indeed feels expendable in Dallas’ offense.
The Cowboys will open their 2023 season with a Week 1 road game against the longtime NFC East rival New York Giants.
