Joey Porter Jr., a cornerback, didn’t fare as well on NFL Draft night one in 2023, missing the first round. But at the start of the second round, he finally received the call after having a touching moment with his father.
According to another former Penn State star, Cowboys pass-rusher Micah Parsons, there is a major silver lining for the ex-Nittany Lion defensive back slipping out of the first round and it has to do with a second contract.
“Man tbh if you outside top 15 second round might be better !!” Parsons tweeted, quoting a video of Porter’s father reacting to his son falling out of Round 1. “You get to re up that bag way quicker!! But I think Joey will be great no matter where he was selected! You can’t teach dog and he has that in him!!”
Unlike Day 2 and 3 selections, Day 1 picks possess a fifth-year option in their rookie deals which gives teams options to keep first-round picks on their relatively inexpensive rookie deals for an extra season, whereas second-round picks and beyond are able to “re up that bag way quicker.”
Porter Jr. was an option for the Steelers at pick No. 17 as Khan revealed he was “rated pretty high” on the team’s board. If the team didn’t trade up to jump the Jets for Broderick Jones, he may have been Pittsburgh’s first-round pick.
However, everything worked out. Porter Jr. gets to play for his dad’s old team and the Steelers may have gotten the steal of the draft.

Not only that, they will have a motivated player who is pissed about dropping out of the first round and he clearly wants to prove people wrong.
