NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport couldn’t even let the end of Super Bowl kick in without dropping a major bombshell on social media regarding the NFL’s investigation into Miami Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross and his most recent tanking allegations.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores is suing the league for alleged racism in its hiring practices, but he also alleged that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross attempted to pay him for losing games on purpose. Flores says Ross offered to pay him an additional $100,000 for every game the team lost.
According to a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Ross could end up losing his team over this.
“If tanking allegations are proven true, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross would face severe discipline, up to and including Ross losing the team by a vote of fellow owners, sources say,” the NFL Network insider tweeted on Monday.
Via the above report:
“Case in point: If the league investigation finds Ross offered Flores $100,000 for each loss during the 2019 NFL season, as Flores alleges, the discipline could be severe, up to and including Ross losing the team by a vote of fellow owners, per sources. Goodell addressed the concept of an owner being voted out last Wednesday, noting that “I do believe that clubs do have the authority to remove an owner from the league.”
A league source confirmed that owners could, in fact, vote a fellow owner out under the most dire circumstances based on league rules, which would require a three-fourths vote.”

In paragraph 14 of Flores’ filed lawsuit, the lawsuit details exactly what Flores said transpired in Miami during his tenure.
“The writing had been on the wall since Mr. Flores’ first season as Head Coach of the Dolphins, when he refused his owner’s directive to ‘tank’ for the first pick in the draft. Indeed, during the 2019 season, Miami’s owner, Stephen Ross, told Mr. Flores that he would pay him $100,000 for every loss, and the team’s General Manager, Chris Grier, told Mr. Flores that ‘Steve’ was ‘mad’ that Mr. Flores’ success in winning games that year was ‘compromising [the team’s] draft position.’”
Ross has denied the allegations, calling them “false, malicious and defamatory” and denies ever tanking. Not helping his case was NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reporting that he spoke to a witness who said he overheard Ross offer Flores $100,000 for every loss. On top of that news is Flores’ attorneys saying they have corroborating evidence to prove the original claims.
