The Miami Dolphins, long viewed as a front-runner in the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes, were reportedly interested in another big-named RB before he wound up getting traded.
Per ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques, colleague Jeremy Fowler heard that the Dolphins “inquired about” D’Andre Swift, whom the Detroit Lions wound up trading to the Philadelphia Eagles:
“We know Dolphins general manager Chris Grier will perform his due diligence, as he does whenever a high-caliber player is available. Sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Miami inquired about running back D’Andre Swift after the Detroit Lions selected Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of last month’s NFL draft.”
The Lions stunned many by using the No. 12 selection on Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs, even though they had Swift and had just signed ex-Chicago Bears’ standout David Montgomery.
Detroit wound up trading Swift and the No. 249 selection to Philadelphia for the No. 219 pick plus a 2025 fourth-round selection. The Eagles lost their top rusher, Miles Sanders, to the Carolina Panthers in free agency.
Last season, Swift recorded 542 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to go along with 48 receptions for 389 yards and three touchdowns. In 2021, Swift compiled a career-high 1,069 yards of offense.
Cook has been the subject of trade rumors since the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Minnesota Vikings can save $9 million if they cut Cook, or $11 million if they end up trading the four-time Pro Bowler.

Having struck out on the Swift sweepstakes, the Dolphins now have even greater reason to pursue a trade for Minnesota’s star running back. Only time will tell if the Vikings are actually keen on moving on, and if the Dolphins will emerge as the lucky winners for Cook’s services.
