The Miami-Dade Police Department has shared its official statement on the controversial arrest of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
On Sunday morning, Tyreek Hill was stopped by police during his commute to Hard Rock Stadium for the Dolphins’ home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Videos quickly surfaced on social media of cops arresting Hill, sparking controversy due to the unnecessary aggression of one arresting officer:
The Miami-Dade Police Department released its official statement on the incident roughly 24 hours after it occurred via Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 South Florida.
In their statement, the department states that Hill was never “under arrest” but only “briefly detained.” The statement claims that Hill was also “uncooperative”, which is why he was placed in handcuffs and subsequently placed on the ground. He was subsequently issued two traffic citations.
The department closed the statement by accusing Hill of initiating “this unfortunate incident.” You can read the full statement below:

After video footage of Tyreek Hill’s detainment went viral, Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels announced that one of the arresting officers was placed on administrative leave.
To make the controversy more bizarre, Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also handcuffed when he attempted to de-escalate the incident between his teammate and the officers.
Tyreek Hill Sparked Dolphins Comeback vs. Jaguars
Hill was able to put the incident behind him and return to his usual dominant form on the football field. His 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter kicked off the Dolphins’ comeback against their inner-state Florida rivals.
The touchdown cut the Jaguars’ lead to three heading into the fourth quarter. Jason Sanders added two field goals (including a game-winning 52-yarder on the game’s final play) to lift Miami to a 20-17 victory.
The 30-year-old Hill and his Dolphins will try to improve to 2-0 when they host the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
