On Wednesday, possibly the least controversial and most ignored holdout came to an end when Melvin Gordon decided he would finally join his team this week.
The Los Angeles Chargers will be back with his teammates this week, but by sitting out three games in an effort to get money, he cost himself dearly.
By skipping all of training camp and the first three games of the season, Gordon has subjected himself to a total of $1.2 million in fines. His remaining base salary for the season is just over $4.6 million.
The $989,000 is definitely gone, but the Chargers don’t have to fine Gordon the maximum amount.
He was initially supposed to holdout for half the season, but was likely informed about how much he would lose in the long run and made a business decision to stop his losses. Gordon is under contract for 2019 and the Chargers have the option of placing the franchise tag on him next offseason if they want to keep him.
He and his agent were given permission to seek a trade, but no team was willing to part ways with multiple draft picks to acquire him.
