In the latest strange move from Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, starting running back Melvin Gordon was benched for the entire second half of his team’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Chargers on Monday night.
Gordon had just three first half carries, turning them into eight yards. Both he and backup Mike Boone took a backseat to Latavius Murray in the second half, as the former Saints practice squad player carried the ball 15 times for 66 yards.
It was a surprising move for many (especially those who started Gordon or Boone in their fantasy football match-ups). After the game, reporters caught up with Gordon, who spoke about the second-half benching.
“It was a close game. I felt like I could’ve helped make a difference, but apparently not,” he told the NFL Network’s Bridget Condon.
Despite handling it in a very professional manner, Gordon clearly wasn’t happy with Hackett’s decision. And based on some of the reactions from the Broncos’ sideline last night, it doesn’t look like he was the only one who’s had enough of his team’s new head coach and starting quarterback.
