Growing pains for rookies in the NFL can suck. Some can come in and produce right away while others need a lot more time to develop into their position.
The Dallas Cowboys walked off the turf at Lumen Field on Saturday disappointed in the result, but a 22-14 loss in the preseason to the Seattle Seahawks hardly compares to what their first-round pick went through all night.
While other young guys sat, Cowboys rookie defensive tackle Mazi Smith played well into the fourth quarter and he left much to be desired.
In Saturday night’s game vs. the Seahawks, the big defensive tackle out of Michigan found himself losing leverage and getting put on his back during several plays
Mazi Smith was absent in the box score and also did not pass the ‘eye test.’
The 6-3, 337-pound Smith is obviously new to the NFL, and will naturally need time to adjust to the pros and to coordinator Dan Quinn’s system. The preseason is the preseason and it is the time to get work in for the youngsters to get better.

Smith will get a chance to silence the unforgiving preseason critics when the Cowboys play their final exhibition game against the Las Vegas Raiders at AT&T Stadium on Saturday. If not, the criticism will only get louder.
