The Dallas Cowboys have received some disturbing injury news this week as one of their rookies, a first-rounder, could miss the start of the upcoming 2023 season.
Defensive tackle Mazi Smith missed training camp on Tuesday and was said to be set for a precautionary MRI on his knee, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who also revealed that the player has been dealing with knee tendinitis this summer.
Smith, who had a remarkable 2022 season for Michigan, is the first DT selected by the Cowboys in the first round since 1991. He recorded one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 48 tackles, and 2.5 tackles for loss in 14 games last year.
The player recently claimed he doesn’t like football but simply enjoys hitting people, and he is pretty good at it. He is particularly adept at defending the running game, which was one of the Cowboys’ biggest weaknesses last season given that they ranked 22nd in run defense.
He is expected to be the starting nose tackle in 2023. However, Jonathan Hankins could be the one who starts if he isn’t good to go in Week 1.

Should the above be the case, it would come as a big blow to Dan Quinn and the Cowboys.
