There were rumors this offseason that the Rams tried to trade Matthew Stafford, and it appears we now know why they were trying to make that move.
Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports has social media buzzing after he shared a tidbit of information about Stafford’s contract on his show last week. Cowherd said the Rams wanted Stafford to rework his deal but he declined, which left the team “frustrated.”
“I was told by a source I trust that they wanted to redo his contract. He wasn’t interested. It limits what they can do and they were frustrated with him,” Cowherd said. “And I could also see them next year taking a quarterback because the way to catch up in this league with personnel is rookie quarterback, go buy four good players.”
Despite the trade rumors, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated was a guest on Cowherd’s show and he disputed the idea that the Rams were looking to trade their quarterback. He added the Rams did “earmark this as a reset year,” when they traded Jalen Ramsey, and Allen Robinson and cut both Bobby Wagner and Leonard Floyd.
Stafford rewrote his own legacy after he was acquired via trade from the Detroit Lions and immediately won a Super Bowl ring in his first year with the Rams. His reward was receiving a massive long-term contract extension. Stafford’s deal is worth $160 million over the next four years, keeping him under contract in Los Angeles until the conclusion of the 2026 NFL season.

It failed almost immediately as Stafford missed eight games last year due to injuries and the Rams posted just a 5-12 record. The Rams asking Matthew Stafford to restructure his contract comes as a result of them entering a bit of a rebuilding phase, but given that he is 35, the QB is not looking to lose any money he knows is coming his way before he heads off into the sunset. Not every QB can play into their 40s like Tom Brady.
Stafford threw for 2,087 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on 206 of 303 passing in nine starts, leading the Rams to a 3-6 record during that span.
